Fence

Lovćenska vila

Around the churchyard there is a unique fence - made from the barrels of rifles seized in the Montenegrin liberation wars against the Turks in the period from 1858 to 1878.

The monument to the sunken ship and volunteers who drowned near Medova (S. Giovanni di Medua, Albania), named “Lovćenska vila”, the work of the academic sculptor Risto Stijović, was erected in 1939. It was unveiled on the Ascension Day, June 6 1940, as an embodiment of high level patriotism, heroism, chivalry and sacrifice of our emigrants, who in early December 1915 hurried far away from America to put their lives on the altar of their homeland Montenegro.

Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God

Some researches dealt with the topic of the genesis and origin of this church and their considerations, though sometimes contradictory, do not question the opinion about the middle of the 15th century as the time of the first construction. Legend shared between some fraternities in Cetinje has it that their ancestor Ivan Borojević from Stari Vlah from Zlatibor, coming to Zeta - Montenegro, settled with his sons in Cetinje field, where he died. Honoring him, the descendants built a small church dedicated to the birth of the Mother of God, wattle - fenced it and buried him near. Another legend says that the original church was built by the old Vlachs - Romanized Vlachs led by the well-known hero Radul Vlah, who was assassina-ted on the orders of Ivan Crnojević, following his intention to establish a new Montenegrin capital in the field of Cetinje, where he had katuns (summer settlements) and estates. Although these legends are scientifically unconfirmed, it can be reasonably assumed that the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God, certainly before the construction of the famous Crnojević's monastery, was built by Vlach herders as a cemetery temple on the site of an old Christian necropolis with specific tombstones. It was named after the Vlachs and the name has been kept to the present day. Together with the monument “Lovćenska vila”, the Vlah church represents one of the most recognizable city scenes.
